Why is Skype more popular than other VOIP products?

Skype is not the first VOIP product, nor the best. Then why did it create a mini-revolution in the telecom space? It seems to have revived VOIP, but I don’t understand how Skype differs from the other players.

Answer by Eagle_Kiwi
I think perhaps the right place at the right time, a product aimed purely at that one market, and very good marketing.

But I believe their golden run is nearly over – with Yahoo now very aggressively pursuing the same market.
Skype is “known” by VOIP enthusiasts, many of whom have become that way due to Skype.
But Yahoo is known by virtually everyone on the whole internet, and ALL those people are now becoming exposed to real possibilities of VOIP direct through “their” Yahoo.

Anyone knows a free Sip VoIP that gives a number in Switzerland?

I am searching for a website such as www.sipgate.co.uk (that give a free UK local phone number of your choice – using X Lite software) that give a free SIP based Switzerland phone number.

Answer by Stella
Switzerland is one of those expensive VOIP countries somewhat. You may not be able to get a free SIP for that country but you can get one for very cheap. Localphone a UK based company gives phone numbers in over 150 countries for a month. It is cheap and can be used from USA, UK or computer. I use that service with there SIP settings on Xlite. Works great. You can find more info about them in the source, thats where I get all my VOIP questions. I call out of country alot so its a good site.

VOIP Phone– Which is a good & cheap Option?

I am looking for a VOIP provider under $ 20 a month that can provide unlimited calls to US and Canada (from a phone example Vonage not computer example Skype). I used to have Sunrocket but once they went down have not switched to anythign else. Please advise?

Answer by emptyfirefly
Tell you what though I am a Vonage (close to 2 years) and MagicJack User (close to 1 Month).
Vonage isn’t too bad their customer service is great (so far no problems) and I recently got 2 months free for telling them I am trying another VOiP service (I didn’t tell them it was the MagicJack) so they try to keep customers but at a price I suppose on THEIR end.
Not hard to install, just plug into your modem and plug your computer in their modem they send you and plug in your phone into the jack labeled “line” or “phone”
Call VONAGE toll free at 1-VONAGE-HELP (1-866-243-4357)
Lastly
MagicJack = + shipping for their product then per year thereafter YES per year
(not much of a number selection)

Vonage = – per month (one or 2 lines)
(WIDE number selection because they lease numbers from phone companies)

Regarding the Magic Jack:
VERY easy to install…..you will be up and running within 5 minutes…!

If you cant get your area code get one from GrandCentral.com….!

I have the MagicJack since last year and love it!!
People either hate or love a product. I love my MagicJack!

I use it with the combination of GrandCentral so I can use different area-codes!!

That’s why they call it the vonage and skype killer!!!

tip: after installation don’t run it on the admin account…create another account for the MJ!!

Also, kinda watch and close out the device manager…but you will all learn that in good time on your own!!.

PROS:
1) PER YEAR calling VoIP style
2) Take it anywhere (in the world) to use with a computer that has a USB port and can be connected to a BROADBAND connection hard wire
3) Plug and play – does not install anything on your computer but meerly places a shortcut to the softphone on your desktop
4) Clear sound with super quality
5) Buy a MagicJack for yourself and your family across on the other side of the US or overseas and make free calls to them

CONS:
1) WILL NOT install on an administrator profile, it MUST BE a “limited” user profile – I found that out myself
I had the MagicJack for 5 days and couldn’t get to work and i had 14 tech support conversations. After the 14th one, I went to the other computer (which was logged in under our son’s account) I plugged the MagicJack in and POOF it worked!!! So from there I figured out that in order to use the MagicJack you have to have a “LIMITED” user account on a computer. I was trying to install this item on “ADMINISTRATOR” user accounts. To prove that I wasn’t crazy I created a NEW account and called it “MagicJackUser” and made it a “LIMITED” account and before you know it, it WOKED!!!
2) Poor tech support (chat based only) I’m sure it’s chat based to keep costs low.
3) Very limited phone number selection – Not nationwide like other services – mine is coupled with my Grandcentral.com number for local calls
4) Computer must be on to make calls – basically you are eliminating the need for one of those “modems/routers” that a company like Vonage provides with their service.
5) Mac issues and also no computer no calls

Remember this product is still in BETA too…

VOIP is a new technology and as such has it’s share of bugs. Magicjack is still in beta as well, and also has it’s share of bugs. However for the price of + shipping you aren’t taking a huge risk. I’m sure the unit will pay for itself with a few months of usage. This unit will probably be popular with regular long distance callers, as well as transient people such as ex-patriates and students. It also has a niche market in people who are looking for an in-expensive second line. I can’t see it replacing a traditional phone service yet, but that may change in the future. Overall it’s worth looking into.

Hey MagicJack, Send them to the Soldiers Overseas!
sorry , that its so long, but I just wanted you to get all the info….!

Hope this helps.

The 2009-2014 World Outlook for VoIP Telephone Service

This econometric study covers the world outlook for VoIP telephone service across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved. This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the 230 countries of the world). This study gives, however, my estimates for the worldwide latent demand, or the P.I.E., for VoIP telephone service. It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided across the world’s regional and national markets. For each country, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time (positive or negative growth). In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on international strategic planning at graduate schools of business.

How to create VOIP PC Software ?

I want to create a software for my business where users should be able to call/msg from their PC to phone.

Something similar to http://www.voipcheap.com/en/download.html

Thanks in advance.

Answer by gregegg10
Well, you’re probably not looking to *create* it…

But, you should just look into Skype.

If you’ve got a decent business, and some money, look at Cisco’s VOIP solutions.

Whats the cheapest way to call to the Philippines? is VOIP cheaper?

I wanted to find out from people who make a lot of internation calls what the cheapest method is to do this? i mean, my girl is in the philippines and im just dialing my regular number and sometimes my phone bill is like 0-0. its way too much. some people recommended i get a VOIP line instead of my phone and itll be cheaper. and other people are saying skype. i dont want her to have to download anything though. and skype you have to talk computer to computer right? i need something that can go through my regular phone because her computer hasnt worked lately, thats the whole reason my bill was so much. she had no email, instant messaging or anything so i was calling all the time, so thats why its so expensive. i need something to make the calls cheaper and VOIP sounds the best so far. anybody know about it? anybody make international calls a lot, have a similar situation to mine?

Answer by ?October Girl?
My dad’s bill is outrageous too. I think the only way to make it cheap is to use Skype, maybe? Send her the money you’re saving on phone bills to help get a computer to talk to you on. It really is cheaper.

My Voip software is connecting fine, but when I do a call, after 20 sec is disconecting and says that…?

“Call ended cause you logged off”, but I didin’t touch even a button. But the problem is that I change my provider, earlier I could make any call in any destination, and now I can’t. I think it’s provider lock, I have a usb modem with a phone card in. An I asked theme if the modem supports voip calls and they answered that supports. But till now I cannot make calls. I tried to turn off my firewall and the same result. Help me to resolve this problem. Thank you a lot! The provider is TMN, Portugal!
