Skype is not the first VOIP product, nor the best. Then why did it create a mini-revolution in the telecom space? It seems to have revived VOIP, but I don’t understand how Skype differs from the other players.
Answer by Eagle_Kiwi
I think perhaps the right place at the right time, a product aimed purely at that one market, and very good marketing.
But I believe their golden run is nearly over – with Yahoo now very aggressively pursuing the same market.
Skype is “known” by VOIP enthusiasts, many of whom have become that way due to Skype.
But Yahoo is known by virtually everyone on the whole internet, and ALL those people are now becoming exposed to real possibilities of VOIP direct through “their” Yahoo.

When you do long distance calls, its more cheaper when you do the VOIP line than the regular per minute telephone or cellular phone charges. I am in favor of the VOIP, what about you?

The question is related to the quality of the comunication related to the usb phones and the classic headset.
Does the usb phone work better than the sound card system (I mean, the headset)? Is the same? Cuold you find any difference in speed of data processing?
The question is bassed in the lag of the beggining of every conversation I make with Skype using the headset. Should I buy the usb phone?
Regards and thanks

I heard some horror stories about how unstable and problematic hardware VoIP is, and that users often has to restart the VoIP adaptors.
Is software VoIP more stable?
How about dropped calls and disconnections? Those are an issue with the internet connection rather than the VoIP, right?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?
Answer by AmandaKerik
Like most things in life… it depends.
Hardware VOIP boxes are just the software and all the things it needs wrapped up in a small package.
Software VOIP is like using your computer to be a hardware VOIP box.
It depends on the actual software, and if the hardware is high enough quality. The main issue with choppy VOIP calls is actually the internet connection.

What are some pros and cons of having your telephone service over VoIP?
TQ
Answer by Benjamin
Yes, the major benefit is how inexpensive it is.
It costs only a few dollars a month to get unlmited local and long distance, and sometimes even International calling.
Another advantage is that you can choose to have an incoming phone number from any geographic location, not just your own.
The cons are:
- The service can be disrupted if the connection is dropped or in a power failure
- The connection can be poor quality if your bandwidth is being chewed up by another computer or if your connection is just slow in general
- You do not always get access to special services like 911, 411, 1900 numbers, etc.
Edit: VoIP is also less regulated, as a result there are less guarantees that your service will work up to your expected standards for a telephone service.

I know calling via VoIP is cheaper than using a normal telephone, but why?
How come the provider can afford to charge you less? Is it cheaper for them?
Answer by joshy
The VoIP provider is using the internet to put the calls through and does not need to pay any overhead for using telephone lines belonging to private companies.

Nick Greif | More than just dropped calls
Nick Greif Last week, AT&T announced that it is dropping its $30 “unlimited data plan” and instead will offer tiered plans priced at $15 for 200 MB or $25 for 2 GB per month. This decision comes as a result of a small number of customers streaming massive quantities of music and video to their Smartphones, consuming a large amount of data each month and almost single-handedly slowing down AT&T’s …

Currently our modem and wireless router is downstairs with a cordless phone attached to the modem. The pc downstairs (just used for browsing) is not in the same room and gets its wireless signal from the router. There is a pc upstairs and xbox360 used for gaming and hd streaming so simply getting a wireless is not nearly enough. I want to move the modem upstairs so I can have the pc and 360 wired, but the phone needs to stay downstairs. Is there anyway to do this or does it have to be attached to the modem at all times. Is there a way to get a wireless expansion base that could go downstairs? It would be much cheaper to buy a new phone that doesnt need to be hooked up by rj11 all the time to the modem rather than reconfigure my whole network (via powerline, or upgrading to n).

I have about had it with AT&T. Ever since their strange merger, things have only gone downhill.
First of all, never in our (I and my husband) lives have we had a $60 landline phone bill. We do not like to use that phone for anything. The only reason we have a landline is for professional/business purposes.
Second, somebody who claimed to be from AT&T had made an attempt to tinker with our connection. If we did not live on a military base and all visitors had to be screened and approved, who knows who these peole where and what they were trying to do.
So, here I am wondering if VOIP is worse or better with that kind of stuff. I would really appreciate knowledgeable opinions. Thank you!
