I’m ready for hosted VoIP at my office. I don’t have money to waste and I’m shopping for the best price and features for my dollar. I’m looking for less than per month per user for the deluxe/full features plan. I’m looking at several companies. Ideally, there’s no (or few) minimum user requirements and no requirement for using this same company’s high-speed internet access, unless it’s better priced than my business cable internet. It must be a hosted solution. Are there any issues or items or fine print (“wish I would have known before”) that we should consider before getting hosted VoIP? Any sites that rank national providers, features and pricing? Would you please recommend a hosted VoIP provider/solution for my small business? I could use the help in making the best decision.
Folks, this is for business, so I’m not looking for a free service and since it’s business class, there won’t be any issues with voice quality. I don’t have a residential internet speed here.

u may be ready for it, but VOIP is not every going to be feasible cause of the law of physics.

I need specific equipment details and and a possible way to set it up
Answer by cornflake#1
Awww come on!!!
What equipment do you have there? What sort of connectivity do you have to the web? Reliability issues? Backup? What about power supplies? Available energy resources? Computer hardware? Computer software? Admin skills available? Support? User training?
There have got to be a bazillion questions we would need answers to before we could even hazzard a guess at solving your problem. If you need specific equipment details – we would need to know your budget for a start!
1] Plug your computer power socket into a convenient power supply outlet.
2] Switch on the socket
3] Check there are no hazzards which could cause harm to you, your computer or anyone close to you – then, switch on the computer…

I’m getting a Cisco 1701 which I know supports VOIP and considering a 2621XM to learn. I know both can do PBX (am I right?). I’d like to use a VOIP phone (or two) and use a land line. Also, I plan to set up a point to point connection to peer wanting to do similar. If I wanted to set up voice over land line what do I need to do, and cheaper method is best. I’ve heard of DID and FXS. DID is more expensive, the cards I’ve found. What interface cards would I need to accomplish inbound and outbound calling for as cheap (within a 100 range) as possible but functional.
Also, say I didn’t use a land line though defeat a big purpose, can I still set up two Cisco IP phones linked? Do I need Call Manager Express, is there a cheaper solution like computer based software?
I’m confused on logistics and how I could go about this. If anyone could provide info, it would be great!
Answer by My_maro
in order to accomplish this you are going to have to have some sort of PBX system. I have been running Trixbox (a flavor of Asterisk) for several years now. Do a search for “Trixbox” formerly known as asterisk @ home. you can DL a distro and install on an older PC you probably have laying around, and then have your phones register to the Trixbox server. Mine runs CentOS )so if you have linux experience it would help) but after installation it is a web based configuration. Pretty easy to figure out.

would VoIP be a good phone solution for a university campus? Is VoIP a viable solution to home phone services? why or why not
Answer by Mr. VoIP
VoIP is a good solution if you want to “save money”.
In the end it is a trade-off between saving money and reliability.
You can’t beat the reliability of PSTN landline service, especially when it comes to 911. But, that security comes at a high price.
VoIP can be somewhat reliable, if you have the expertise to support the technical issues that may arise.
I use VoIP for all of my phone calling. But, I also have some technical aptitude to support and configure my equipment.
But, I also have opted to keep my “Basic Landline” PSTN phone service strictly for backup and emergency use. So, I have no long distance or any other extra features on the landline service.
I would certainly recommend VoIP for all long distance calling. You can save substantial money just by using VoIP for long distance calls.
