Like line maintenance fees, taxes, a discontinuation of service fee, etc? I can’t seem to get any straight answers for either company.

If you switch to VoIP, you can cancel your land-line telephone service. If you are under a term contract with your current telephone service provider, you may be charged an early termination fee to cancel before the contract term has been reached.
Note that you still require an Internet connection to use VoIP. If you are using DSL Internet (as opposed to cable or fiber internet), you will need to contact your Internet service provider to get a “dry” loop or “naked” DSL service setup, this is if you want to cancel your land-line service and keep your Internet service active (you may be charged extra per month for this privilege).
You do not need to cancel your land-line phone service though, you can operate both phone services in parallel. It is also advisable to have at least one other phone line (whether it be a land-line or cell phone) if you switch to VoIP because VoIP is relatively unreliable compared to a standard land-line and you cannot count on it working in emergencies or power outages for example.
VoIP companies do not charge line maintenance fees, system access fees, or any other such charges. They may charge a e911 regulatory service fee which covers the cost of providing 911 emergency services on your digital VoIP line (this is not optional and typically costs between – a month and is sometimes included).
You shouldn’t be taxed extra for your VoIP line like some land-line services are, but your bill may include any standard sales tax if applicable.

I would like to purchase a 2 yr contract for Verizon National Broadband access for my laptop using their USB wireless modem/card and would like to be able to make mobile phone calls using their VoIP service, Voice Wing by Verizon Wireless. Is there anything especially in terms of the consent of Verizon that would prevent my doing this?

Sure you can.. But don’t forget about the fun new Bluetooth option you have as well. Check into Verizon Bluetooth!

Are there any programs or websites out there that allow completely free VoIP calls? No monthly or pay as you go fees? No sign up fees? Just free calling? I know its probably a dream too good to be true – just wondering if I could get lucky.
Thank you in advance for you help!

I know I can use Skype to call US numbers from Switzerland, but I want my friends in the US to be able to call me easily, by simply calling my Google Voice number, which I could forward to something like Rebtel. But Rebtel doesn’t offer a flat monthly rate, which I’d prefer so that I don’t have to worry about keeping track of incoming call minutes.

I have cable right now but I live with my folks. I am moving out next month and have no clue how to connect my desktop to the internet. I have a VoIP phone and prefer it that way so am not planning on getting a landline phone at all. Any suggestions as I am technologically challenged?

My office desk is starting to get really cluttered, and I really don’t have much use for my PCI modem, anymore. I was wondering if I could use the computer as a household telephone by using a headset speaker and microphone. I’m not referring to VOIP services such as Skype, but an actual landline telephone.
Is there any software available that can do this, and includes caller ID as well?
