Having VoiP in separate room than modem possible??

Currently our modem and wireless router is downstairs with a cordless phone attached to the modem. The pc downstairs (just used for browsing) is not in the same room and gets its wireless signal from the router. There is a pc upstairs and xbox360 used for gaming and hd streaming so simply getting a wireless is not nearly enough. I want to move the modem upstairs so I can have the pc and 360 wired, but the phone needs to stay downstairs. Is there anyway to do this or does it have to be attached to the modem at all times. Is there a way to get a wireless expansion base that could go downstairs? It would be much cheaper to buy a new phone that doesnt need to be hooked up by rj11 all the time to the modem rather than reconfigure my whole network (via powerline, or upgrading to n).

yes!! no problem…..I have a similar set -up!

get a DECT 6.0 and plug the main base phone into the modem/router….however your set up is….then I use several phone extentions in every room in the house…..no plug needed, just an electrical outlet for the extentions power-supply…

I also use a DECT 6.0 cordless expandable phone with multiple extension accessory phones. The base unit just plugs directly into my VoIP ATA box RJ-11 jack. Now the remote handsets are accessible anywhere else in the house.

if you have existing telephone wiring in your home, you can connect your ATA to your telephone wiring, and wire the whole house with the VoIP service…

you can run a CAT 3 (or even better CAT 5 cable) to connect your ATA to a phone jack in the location where you wish to keep your phone….

if the phone is a fairly new cordless phone it may be expandable, and you may be able to just purchace an additional handset and charger for the phone… leave the base near the ATA and modem, and put the expansion handset wherever you want in your home.
